Domestic Violence Project

For the past 25 years, I have consistently worked on the domestic violence project. The initial project began in protest to the war with Iraq. At that time, media outlets were focusing on nightly war casualties as a means of paying tribute to the lives being lost. I decided to begin a tally of my own that would acknowledge the tragedy of lives lost in the daily wars here at home in the United States. I began to research and gather data recorded for domestic violence homicides in the US.

In those early searches, I was directed to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, FBI officials, individual state domestic violence coalitions, and so many others who were helpful, generous with their time, and grateful that someone was interested in this ubiquitous and complicated problem. Finding information was not easy. Record keeping practices varied from state to state and many lacked the resources needed to accumulate and collate this information. I was hoping to be able to bring attention to the lives lost in domestic wars here with the same reverence, remembrance, and acknowledgement as any other war. The project has evolved and broadened over the years. I continue to accumulate data on this type of violence but have begun gathering worldwide information.  With the availability of information sharing over the past several years, there are many more resources and organizations that are now involved in working to identify and help those in abusive situations.

These installations are about secrets and about telling - saying out loud the untold.

American Sampler, 2020
Domestic Violence Data From Each U.S. State: 50 Articles of Clothing

American Sampler is an installation about child violence in each of the 50 United States. It is about saying out loud the untold. It is about secrets and the power of telling. At this moment in time, there are an estimated 2 billion children on the planet and half of them experience some form of abuse daily. For the past 20 years, I have consistently worked on this project as a means of both acknowledging the lives lost in this country to domestic violence and as an attempt to encourage a more open dialogue about something we just don’t like to speak about. Child abuse occurs across every economic social strata; it happens to children of all cultures, races and sexual orientations.  Talking about and recognizing that this mostly hidden violence occurs everywhere on a daily basis offers the opportunity for help, healing and encourages new models for recovery, hope and change.
